QDesign
to Provide Advanced Scalable Audio Technology to InterTrust and MetaTrust-Certified
Audio Applications
InterTrust
and QDesign to combine Digital Rights Management and audio technology
for a secure, scalable music solution that supports rights-managed content
for download and streaming
February 14, 2000, Santa Clara, CA and Vancouver, BC
- - InterTrust Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq: ITRU), the MetaTrust
Utility™, and QDesign Corporation, a leading provider of digital audio
compression technologies, today announced a technology partnership for
the use of QDesign’s audio codec technology in MetaTrust-Certified™ audio
applications. The partnership is aimed at developing a digital rights
management (DRM) enabled, scalable audio format for digital streaming
applications. Further, QDesign and InterTrust will work together to integrate
DRM technology into the Windows version of the recently released MVP audio/video
player, a cross-platform (for MacOS and Windows) software application
for recording and playback of digital music and videos.
Adding the QDesign high quality, scalable audio codec to the growing list
of DRM-enabled audio formats (MP3, AAC, and others) will result in more
digital music commerce options for music player companies, content owners
and consumers. Music player companies will have more DRM-enabled development
options. Content owners will have extensive control over how their music
content is promoted, licensed, and sold without the need to re-purpose
content each time new distribution and business models are introduced.
Consumers will have greater choice in DRM-enabled music players as InterTrust
and QDesign work to integrate DRM into the audio capabilities of the MVP
application, with the goal of becoming a MetaTrust-Certified audio application.
The QDesign Music codec is optimized to produce high quality audio at
data rates as low as 1 kByte per second. The combination of scalability
and quality of the latest QDesign audio technology allows a single encoded
source file to serve a broad range of music products and services, from
music download to personalized streaming Internet radio. The “on-the-fly”
scalability allows QDesign encoded audio to automatically fit to available
storage (i.e., up to 5 times more audio than standard MP3 files on portable
music players) as well as dynamically adapt to available bandwidth for
Internet streaming.
“InterTrust provides the most comprehensive DRM technology for all digital
content types,” said Richard J. Beaton, president, QDesign Corporation.
“By integrating InterTrust DRM with the scalability of the QDesign audio
technology, we are providing content owners with the most robust system
for creating, promoting, and delivering digital music around e-commerce.”
"InterTrust seeks to provide the broadest selection of codec technology
support for audio and video possible," said Talal Shamoon, senior vice
president, Media, InterTrust Technologies Corporation. "The QDesign
audio codec technology offers a level of scalability quality and control
that elegantly complements the InterTrust DRM platform. The combination
of technologies presents content owners and consumers an innovative array
of options for new music products and services, using existing and emerging
delivery mechanisms."

InterTrust Digital Rights Management
Digital rights management (DRM) technologies protect and manage rights
and interests in digital information. InterTrust’s DRM platform provides
a common foundation for distributed e-commerce digital information and
event management. In the content industry, this allows authors, publishers,
enterprises, governments, users and others to specify, as appropriate,
rules regarding the use of digital information, and the consequences resulting
from such use. InterTrust® technology is designed to protect digital information,
apply rules persistently after information is distributed, and automate
many e-commerce processes related to content use. InterTrust’s DRM platform
is general purpose and manages most media and content types, including
music, publications, business information, video, games, software, and
images. InterTrust DRM is enhanced by its use in the MetaTrust Utility,
a non-discriminatory, policy neutral, global environment for digital commerce.
InterTrust Technologies Corporation
InterTrust Technologies Corporation is the leading developer of distributed
digital rights management (DRM) technology. InterTrust has developed a
general purpose DRM platform that serves as a foundation for providers
of digital information, technology, and commerce services. InterTrust
licenses its DRM platform as software and tools to partners. Collectively,
these partners offer digital commerce services and applications that form
a global commerce system branded as the "MetaTrust Utility." InterTrust
serves as the neutral administrator of the MetaTrust environment.
