i-Media
Audio supports the new Broadcast Wave Format (BWF)
Vancouver, Canada (March 22, 1997) - QDesign Corporation announced
today that its new version of i-Media Audio MPEG-2 stereo encoder/decoder
software supports the new Broadcast Wave Format (BWF).
The BWF (formerly called BIF) is a new standard format for sound files
in broadcasting, approved by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The
format is based on the widely-used Microsoft Wave file format, with the
addition of a broadcast audio extension chunk for the identification of
the program content.
i-Media Audio is the industry's leading MPEG-2 audio software technology,
providing superior fidelity and unsurpassed MPEG encoding and decoding
performance. Operating on standard multimedia PC's, i-Media Audio MPEG
Pro enables users to encode studio-quality audio in real-time without
the need for proprietary MPEG hardware. A version is available on the
Macintosh platform for Digidesign Pro ToolsŪ users.
MPEG Layer II was developed as an international standard for high-quality
audio bitrate reduction and transmission. Although raw MPEG bitstreams
are standards compliant, many vendors have incorporated custom file formats
in their products which has led to incompatibility between systems from
different MPEG vendors. The BWF is an attempt to reconcile this incompatibility
and to ensure that MPEG audio users are able to maximize the value of
MPEG.
"QDesign is committed to supporting and promoting standards throughout
the industry. The BWF was developed through a collaboration of leading
industry representatives, and we expect it to be rapidly adopted as the
standard file format for exchange of broadcast audio content," says Richard
J. Beaton, President of QDesign. Please contact QDesign for more information
on the BWF-format or visit
Swedish Broadcasting Corporation. i-Media Audio is distributed worldwide
by Digidesign, a division of AVID Technology. A FREE demo version of i-Media
Audio MPEG Pro is available for download at QDesign's website, www.qdesign.com.
