what is compression?

Compression is about creating -- and delivering -- more with less. For example, one minute of linear CD audio requires 11 MB of storage. The same file can be compressed to less than 10% of its original size without any noticeable loss in audio fidelity. This allows for up to five times more audio storage on Internet music players than standard MP3's. No other technology can stream full bandwidth 44.1 kHz stereo sound over a 28k modem.

Whatever the digital medium -- CD-ROM, DVD, the Internet or portable media devices -- the key to superior playback fidelity lies in the encoding. QDesign is committed to providing the highest possible audio quality to meet the needs of the full spectrum of new media audio applications, from broadcast production and archival to music distribution over the Internet. A founding member of the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI), QDesign understands that producers and consumers alike demand quality, simplicity and flexibility in the rapidly changing world of music and new media.
